VOLUNTEER ENGLISH PROGRAM
IN CHESTER COUNTY
The Volunteer English Program serves over 270 adult learners, the majority of whom are immigrant and/or refugee women. Most students are among the working poor and are in the country legally. With a large, dedicated group of volunteers, the organization provides free, one-on-one tutoring for adults to improve English language skills necessary for employment, self-sufficiency, and economic stability.

English language acquisitions allows new Americans to attain employment or career advancement and be more active civic participants.
According to the 2010 ccensus, over 8,000 individuals living in Chester County and not born in the United States, reported that they do not speak English well. Through one-to-one English language tutoring, the Volunteer English Program in Chester County helps women find their voice -- to express themselves and to understand others. Women gain self-confidence through new language and cultural skills.
